The ideal job & workplace
A lot of people have been asking me about my ideal job lately. Most of them don’t understand why pay is not the only factor that matters to a good software engineer. So here it is: position requires writing lot of code. firm’s core business is writing software. preferably a small development team in a startup-like environment. people are passionate about the product/service...
Post BarCamp Thoughts & Comments
The first BarCamp Singapore happened at NTUC Centre on Saturday. A sizeable no. of people turned up (my estimate is 30-35 people). A lot of credit should go to Chandra, Ming Yeow and others who organised the event, secured a good venue, and got sponsorships for the cool t-shirts (from Yahoo!) and the pizzas (from IDA). Things that I feel should be changed in the next BarCamp: Presentation slots...
BarCamp Singapore is here
BarCamp Singapore is happening tomorrow at the NTUC Centre (starts at 3:15 PM). I’ll be giving a talk on the Django web framework titled “Django: Indenting jazz for the web” (if you’re a Pythonista, you would know what I mean :)
If you just heard about this and still want to come, you’re welcome to do so. Just sign up on the BarCamp wiki and turn up tomorrow!

The Venice Project
I always wondered how Zennstrom and Friis managed to use the same P2P technology for their Venice project after having sold Skype to eBay. Apparently they still own the core P2P technology under the name Joltid, and Skype still licenses it from that company. After Zennstrom left to work full time as the CEO of Skype, de Wahl took over as the chief executive of JoltId, the company that controls...

"Chief Globalisation Officer"
Apparently that’s a real job title at Cisco! And guess where does that person work? In Bangalore. I just loved the reaction from one of their family members when this person decided to take the job :) “My mother-in-law said to my wife, ‘What did you do to deserve this?’” said Elfrink, who was scheduled to depart Sunday for a luxury home he’s leasing in the...
Lifting a Boeing jet to replace its tires…
I was watching Discovery and they were showing how they replace the tires on a Boeing jumbo jet. One of the cool things is you would assume that you need some super-strong mega jack to lift the aircraft. But apparently a simple hydraulic lift is enough to do the job. And most importantly, they use a clever trick here:
The input force that they have to apply is actually obtained by just...
Tech interviews
I just couldn’t stop laughing after reading the following from a Joel Spolsky article. He mentions about the two kinds of geeks that you’ll find often:
People who are Smart but don’t Get Things Done often have PhDs and work in big companies where nobody listens to them because they are completely impractical. They would rather mull over something academic about a problem rather than...

Vertical search engine for travel
If you’re hunting for jobs in Singapore or in India (or anywhere else in Asia), you should check out recruit.net. Recruit.net crawls all the major job boards, company websites, etc and indexes them. Most importantly recruit.net lets you setup alerts on keywords and receive email notifications and also lets you subscribe to persistent searches via RSS. technorati tags:jobs, search, crawler,...
